Meet Travis
Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis of Lovelee Photography.
Travis, please share your story with us.
We are professional photographers located in Scottsdale, Arizona. Together, we share the love of our son and enjoy taking trips to the Caribbean. We originally met and fell in love in 2010 while working in a similar field, our love grew fast and within months we decided to move in together, soon after that, we were married, and directly after that, we started our family with an amazingly well behaved little boy. Just before our son was born, we decided that it was time to follow our passion for photography by building a business focused on the clients’ expectations so, we quit our day jobs and have been full-time professional photographers in the valley for 7 years now!
While we specialize in weddings and engagement sessions, our years of experience has offered up a tremendous amount of opportunity to shoot everything from newborn sessions to boudoir! It’s difficult to say no to a client that we’ve grown close to over the course of their wedding once they ask us if we can please be their photographer for the next phase of their lives. Forming a bond with our couples and families allows them to be far more comfortable with us as photographers, which creates an environment that is enjoyable and fun – plus your photos look better when you’re enjoying yourself!
When we’re not photographing weddings and lifestyle sessions, we enjoy spending time with friends and family, enjoying the Arizona sun and soaking up the rain (when we get it!). You can find us shopping at Fashion Square Mall or relaxing at Scottsdale Quarter with any free time that might find us. As photographers, “free time” can be an elusive term! We put a great deal of energy and time into our knowledge base, our sessions, and the development process afterward. It can keep us pretty busy!
Photography is an intimate business – and we’re not just talking about boudoir sessions – we become close with our clients which often leads to great relationships and even better friendships! If you think about it, these moments are personal, no one is hiring a professional photographer to capture a moment in time that they’re not passionate about, right? We love to learn about what makes this particular moment for each specific couple or families means to them personally, which allows us to capture that emotion and the connection that our clients have each other. Sometimes, that connection comes in the form of; a newborn baby, the love of their life, important grandparents or a beloved pet. If you’re not getting to know your couples or families on another level then you’re going to lack something special about the photography experience and final product. Plus, we’re constantly making new friends and how great is that!?
Photography has become a part of our lifestyle and the fantastic clients that we meet along the way make the path worth every bit of the effort that we have put into our brand and product. We are so fortunate to be able to do what we do full time and we wouldn’t give it up for the world!
Both of our names happened to be Lee (an odd coincidence) and we, therefore, gave our son the same middle name of Lee, and perhaps quite naturally, the name Lovelee Photography (read: Lovely Photography) was born!
Please tell us about your art.
Our creative process has taken on quite the evolution over the years since we have been in business. We began by jumping right in, learning the industry and our camera settings along the way. Things grew quickly and we opened up our studio on the Westside in 2011. We soon found that natural light photography was more beautiful to our eye and while it can be more challenging to control, once you get the hang of it you can truly master a beautiful outdoor session! While we’re well versed in natural light manipulation we do also deploy our master lighting kits at bridal receptions and when necessary. In the right moment, there is nothing more beautiful than a well-lit night-time photo!
I myself appreciate a sharp image that is full of color and depth. Naturally, we found a balance between the two, which admittedly, wasn’t the smoothest or easiest process but, we did it and I like to think that we’ve mastered it! Together we combined our preferences and have developed a process that creates a beautifully classic image with bright colors, controlled contrast, subtle vibrancy, sharp focus lines, creamy lens blur, and of course, a candid style session that is exploding with emotion and authenticity between our subjects. We accomplish the latter portion of that vision by employing a method of posing our couples and families, to ensure that you look your best, but allow them to relax into the pose so that they can have fun and be natural, all while looking your absolute best… but, I can’t give away all of our secrets!
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I believe that artists have always struggled. It’s a competitive world out there! All across the nation as well as locally, here in Arizona getting into the arts takes a large risk. I believe that if you want to follow your passion you have to jump in head first. I often see photographers and other industry professionals struggle because they are working a full-time job while trying to operate a business such as photography. The truth is, it’s not a part-time job, a misconception that I believe many have. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that if you’re passionate about photography you should absolutely make it your hobby and maybe even make a little money at it! However, try not to get frustrated if all of your dreams aren’t coming true right away. This business demands a major commitment to the art of photography, the development of the images, and being a people person is essential.
I believe that Scottsdale itself has been doing a fantastic job bringing the arts to the community with the recent Culinary Festival, the Art & Wine Fest, and other notable festivals such as the one in Fountain Hills. There is the arts district downtown and the Scottsdale Civic Center has a big LOVE sign that you can enjoy while taking in the mid-century modern decor.
This can be a tough business, getting started demands a large commitment and a lot of time and investment but, once you put in that work it can be the most wonderful that you’ve ever done for yourself!
